Hylas 45.5 Review

The Hylas 45.5 is the precursor to the immensely popular Hylas 46. Based on the same hull form, this center cockpit yacht designed by German Frers is ideal for short-handed sailing with a well-balanced rig and a displacement ratio (50%) that delivers phenomenal performance in a stiff breeze. Fun and easy to sail, the Hylas 45.5 has proven to be a great option for many budget-minded cruisers.

With a tasteful sheer line and elegant lines, the hallmarks of German Frers are evident in all aspects of the Hylas 45.5.  With a high aspect rig and smartly configured cockpit, generously sized for comfort and functionality, this is an ideal cruising boat.

The hull is constructed of solid hand laid fiberglass (GRP) and mated to the deck and is both glassed and mechanically fastened to the deck with stainless steel bolts on 4-inch centers secured through the toe rail. The deck is constructed of endgrain balsa but is solid fiberglass in areas of high stress such as at the base of the mast and the deck fittings. Numerous opening deck hatches and portlights provide natural ventilation and excellent lighting.

Safe and comfortable at sea or at anchor, the Hylas 45.5 sports amenities and finishing reserved for much larger yachts.  The two-cabin configuration includes a sizeable guest stateroom forward with ensuite head and a full beam owners’ stateroom aft with centerline queen and private head with shower.  The main saloon is well thought out and large enough for entertaining with a settee to starboard with convertible pilot berth, a wraparound seating area with dinette to port, and a full-length passageway galley with ample storage and counter space to starboard.

Very similar to the Hylas 46, the 45.5 has a narrower transom and shorter sugar scoop swim platform. Less common than other Hylas models, but an ideal choice for those with the patience to wait for the right boat.  Budget-minded cruisers can expect these boats to be well cared for and well equipped.
