While the Annapolis to Newport Race, as we know it today, was officially established in 1947, its origins trace back even further. Variations of the race took place in 1871, 1875, and 1879, with small fleets navigating from Sandy Hook to Cape May. The event resurfaced from 1927-1933 and in 1939 with courses stretching from New London, CT to Gibson Island, MD. The race continued to evolve, with courses reaching Hampton, VA, before settling into the established Annapolis to Newport route in 1957. The reversal of the course came after competitors voiced concerns about the grueling final leg up the Chesapeake Bay following a demanding offshore passage.
