SAILING SEMINARS SPONSORED BY NORTH SAILS
FRIDAY @ 10:00 AM
Understanding Offwind Sails for Modern Cruisers
Overview:
This seminar will delve into the evolution of offwind sails and their importance in modern sail plans. As sailboat designs have shifted from the traditional large overlapping genoas of older sloops to configurations featuring larger mainsails and smaller non-overlapping jibs, it has become increasingly important for cruisers to explore the benefits of specialized offwind sails. These sails, such as Code Zeros and cruising spinnakers, are designed to maintain performance at deeper wind angles, ensuring that today’s yachts achieve optimal speed and handling across a range of conditions.
Topics Covered:
- Changes in Sail Plans and Performance Considerations: Analyzing how and why sail plans have changed, and what that means for sailing in varying wind conditions.
- Introduction to Offwind Sails: Understanding the different types of offwind sails, including Code Zeros and asymmetrical spinnakers, and how they can be used effectively to complement modern sail configurations.
- Selecting the Right Sails for Your Needs: A discussion on the key considerations when choosing offwind sails based on boat type, sailing region, and anticipated wind angles. Learn about the differences in materials, design, and the role of midgirth measurements.
- Deployment and Handling Techniques: Practical tips for deploying and managing these sails on the water, including considerations for furling systems, snuffers, and rigging.
SATURDAY @ 10:00 AM
