The Hylas 48 incorporates a solid hand-laid fiberglass layup with no core and uses vinyl ester resins and an Isophthalic gel coat. The hull has two layers of epoxy barrier coats below the waterline for optimal protection, followed by three coats of bottom paint. Watertight bulkheads are located forward of the forward cabin with independent overboard drainage and at the stern section across aft lazarettes and stern locker.
The deck is constructed of hand-lay GRP with an end-grain balsa core and solid fiberglass in all areas for deck fittings and high-stress areas. A divided anchor locker with a separate locker for fenders and warps is located forward, with additional deck storage located aft. Two large stern lazarettes to port and starboard have secure locking latches. The stern locker also has a dedicated auto bilge pump plus a manual override in the cockpit. The deck is finished with contrasting non-skid.
The solid lead keel has a draft of 6’ 6” while the semi-skegged rudder delivers optimal performance, strength and protection. The bottom of rudder plane is above the keel plane for grounding safety.
